This course provides a detailed description of what visualization is, how it works, how to use it, its role in numerous applications, how to implement and deploy visualizations with applications.

The goal of this course is to provide you with a solid understanding of the concepts and techniques found within the field of data visualization. I define what is meant by “visualization” and what my motivation is teaching the course. I will describe the goals I hope you will achieve through the course, though this will vary based on your background and whether your goal is to become a knowledgeable user of visualization systems or a developer of visualization tools. I will provide some initial definitions and provide examples as an introduction to the field as well as discuss the sample data sets we will use in the examples. Finally, I provide a road map through the course, identifying the chapters and sections most appropriate for each of you.

The course will use draft book materials. We will use scribes to provide supplementary notes that will be placed on the course wiki page. Criticisms, notes, exercise suggestions, solutions, programming problems, other topics, etc…, are encouraged and welcome.
